RED DESERT LIVE FESTIVAL 2009
“River of Time”
by John Alty, Craig Freeman and Patrick Neu
The work, RIVER OF TIME consists of digital sound/music and images together with a sixteen part continuous sequence of large paintings.
John Alty painted this work, depicting the Murray River in all its seasons and moods, during a two year residency at the Broken Hill Art Exchange. River of Time is based on John’s five years experience voyaging long sections of the river on the sailing raft “William Willis”. While painting the work he collaborated with other resident artists Craig Freeman and Patrick Neu. Craig produced sound/music and Patrick made the accompanying close up digital imagery for the piece.
Dimensions: 15m (45ft) x 2.4m (7ft) oil/collage on 16 recycled doors
The work was first presented at the Murray Darling Palimpsest (2009), a contemporary visual arts event focussing on regional places. The event directly engages issues of environmental and social sustainability. The Murray Darling Palimpsest is coordinated from Mildura, Victoria with representatives from the Mildura Arts Centre, Latrobe University, Mildura Rural City Council and Sunraysia Institute of TAFE. The Broken Hill Art Exchange Inc. is the host organisaton for Broken Hill and surrounds. The work was also exhibited during the ‘Get Off Your Arts’ event in Broken Hill, where it received outstanding reviews by the public.
jefsART Photomedia Projection
The selection of photomantages focus on native wildlife and the original Giclee prints are available by contacting jefsART. The philosophy of jefsART is being aware of composition, balance, symmetry and a sense of wonder, which are all involved in the creative act. That act matters, but the method used seems secondary whether its spitting mud onto a hand used as a stencil on a cave wall, or aiming hi – tech spray heads that spit ink onto paper or canvas, the creative intent and final outcome is the artist’s soul. That, hopefully is the art, because ‘Art is really, what you feel, not what you see’.

Algate House Photography Program 2009
The Photography Program was one of the initial projects developed by the Broken Hill Art Exchange to increase the engagement between the art and health sectors in Broken Hill. Ten professional photographers and artists were asked to conduct ten week workshops with clients from Algate House LISK Community Access and Day Program Service.
The projection displays the photographic work by the clients at Algate House/Salvation Army and a selection of works from the professional photographers involved.
The aim of this program is to support ‘social inclusion’, by bringing different community’s together, that might not otherwise have occasion to meet. The workshop presenters included Robin Sellick, Glen Ravo, Pip Hughes, Angela Fitzpatrick, Sandi James, Michele Simons, Andrew Gosling, Susan Thomas, Boris Hlavica and Patrick Neu.
